Ford Warranty Guide — What's Covered & For How Long
Ford Warranty Guide: What's Covered, What Isn't, and How Long It Lasts
Factory coverage is one of the least understood parts of buying a vehicle — right up until the day something breaks. Most drivers know the phrase "bumper-to-bumper," but far fewer could tell you that Ford's powertrain coverage runs nearly twice as long, that rust-through protection ignores your odometer entirely, or that a hybrid battery carries its own eight-year clock. This Ford warranty guide lays out every layer of coverage on a 2026 Ford in plain language, and explains where Ford Protect extended service plans pick up after the factory term ends.
Everything below is drawn from Ford's official 2026 Model Year Warranty Guide rather than guesswork, and it applies whether you're driving an F-150, an Explorer, a Bronco, or a Mustang Mach-E. If you'd rather have someone walk you through the fine print in person, the team at our Ford service center in Saline, MI handles warranty claims and recall work every day and can pull up the exact coverage tied to your VIN in a couple of minutes.
One important note before the numbers: every Ford warranty term is expressed as "years or miles, whichever comes first," and the clock starts on your warranty start date — the day the vehicle was first delivered or first put into service as a demonstrator or company car. A three-year term on a truck you bought used in its second year does not restart. It picks up wherever the original owner left off, at no cost to you.
Ford Warranty Coverage at a Glance: A new 2026 Ford carries 3 years/36,000 miles of Bumper-to-Bumper coverage, 5 years/60,000 miles of Powertrain coverage, 5 years of unlimited-mileage corrosion perforation protection, 5 years/60,000 miles of Roadside Assistance, and 8 years/100,000 miles on unique hybrid and electric components, including the high-voltage battery. The Six Warranties Inside Every New Ford
What people call "the Ford warranty" is really a stack of separate coverages, each with its own term and its own list of parts. Here's what each one actually protects, so you can tell at a glance which coverage a repair falls under.
📋 Bumper-to-Bumper Limited Warranty
3 years or 36,000 miles. This is the broad one. It covers repairs to correct defects in factory material or workmanship on virtually every component of the vehicle, parts and labor included, with no deductible. Infotainment modules, power windows, climate control, sensors, trim fasteners — if it left the factory faulty and it isn't a wear or maintenance item, this is the coverage that pays.
⚙ Powertrain Warranty
5 years or 60,000 miles. After the bumper-to-bumper term expires, powertrain coverage keeps protecting the expensive hardware: the engine's internal parts, cylinder heads and block, the transmission or transaxle case and internals, the torque converter, drive axles, and driveshafts. On a truck or SUV, these are the repairs that would otherwise run into four figures.
🛡 Safety Restraint System Coverage
5 years or 60,000 miles. Seat belts and air bags get their own extended term, separate from the bumper-to-bumper clock. Ford covers defects in these components for the full five years or 60,000 miles, which is worth knowing because restraint-system warning lights are one of the more common reasons owners visit a service drive after year three.
🔧 Corrosion & Perforation Coverage
5 years, unlimited miles. This one ignores your odometer completely, which matters in Michigan. If a body sheet metal panel is perforated — rusted all the way through — during normal use, Ford covers the repair for five years no matter how many miles are on the truck. Aluminum panel corrosion not caused by abuse is covered on the same five-year, unlimited-mileage basis.
🔌 Hybrid, PHEV & Electric Component Coverage
8 years or 100,000 miles. Electrified Fords — the F-150 Lightning, Mustang Mach-E, Escape Hybrid, Explorer Hybrid and Maverick Hybrid among them — carry a long-term warranty on their unique high-voltage hardware: the traction battery, electric drive motors, inverters, and DC/DC converters. Note that this coverage addresses defects, not the gradual capacity fade that all lithium-ion batteries experience over time.
🚗 Ford Roadside Assistance
5 years or 60,000 miles. Included at no extra charge and available 24/7/365 at 1-800-241-3673. It covers towing to the nearest Ford dealership, flat-tire changes when you have a usable spare, jump-starts for the 12-volt battery, lockout help, limited emergency fuel delivery, and winch-out service when your vehicle is within 100 feet of a paved road.
Ford Warranty Questions We Answer Most Often
These are the questions that come up daily on our service drive and in our showroom. Each answer below is checked against Ford's published 2026 warranty terms.
Does the warranty transfer if I sell my Ford? Yes. Ford's New Vehicle Limited Warranty follows the vehicle, not the buyer, and transfers to a subsequent owner at no cost and with no paperwork fee. If you purchase a previously owned 2026 Ford, you're eligible for whatever coverage remains on the original clock.
Do I have to service my Ford at a Ford dealer to keep the warranty valid? No — you are not required to service at a dealership. What you are required to do is follow the maintenance schedule in your owner's manual and keep records proving it. Skipped or undocumented maintenance is one of the few ways an owner can jeopardize a legitimate claim.
Is my Super Duty's diesel engine covered on a different schedule? It is. Ford's direct-injection diesel engines carry extended coverage for 5 years or 100,000 miles on components including the engine block and heads, internal parts, turbocharger assembly, fuel system, and specified sensors — well beyond the standard powertrain term.
What about emissions equipment? Emissions parts are covered under separate federal and state warranties. Federal defect coverage generally runs 2 years or 24,000 miles, with designated major emissions components covered up to 8 years or 80,000 miles. California-certified vehicles add long-term coverage of 7 years or 70,000 miles on designated parts.

What the Ford Warranty Does Not Cover
Knowing the exclusions is as useful as knowing the coverage — it's what keeps a service visit from turning into a surprise. Here are the four categories that account for nearly every declined claim.
Routine Maintenance & Wear Items
Oil and filter changes, tire rotations, cabin and engine air filters, wiper blades, and clutch linings are owner responsibilities, not warranty repairs. Two useful exceptions: brake pads and linings are replaced at no charge if they wear out during the first 12 months or 18,000 miles, and wheel alignment and tire balancing are provided during the first 12 months or 12,000 miles in service.
Tires Are Handled Separately
Factory-supplied tires aren't part of the New Vehicle Limited Warranty. Defects in material or workmanship are settled on an adjustment basis: Ford covers the labor and prorates the parts credit against the mileage you've already used, with the largest credit in the first 12,000 miles. Road hazard damage — nails, curbs, potholes — isn't a defect, which is why many owners add one of our tire and wheel protection plans at purchase.
Damage, Modifications & Misuse
Collision and accident damage, environmental fallout, hail, flood, and vandalism fall to your insurance rather than Ford. Coverage can also be denied for damage traced to unapproved modifications, non-Ford replacement parts, racing or other competition use, or an altered or disconnected odometer. Aftermarket tunes on EcoBoost® engines are a common and costly example.
Battery Capacity Fade & Surface Rust
Two exclusions surprise owners most. On electrified models, the gradual loss of high-voltage battery capacity over years of use is treated as normal wear rather than a defect. And on the corrosion side, only perforation is covered — surface rust, stone chips, and paint deterioration from road salt or environmental exposure are not. Paint damage from environmental fallout is an exception if reported within seven days of delivery.
After the Factory Term: Ford Protect Extended Service Plans
Factory coverage ends on a date and a mileage number, but repair bills don't respect either one. Ford Protect is Ford's own extended service plan program — not third-party coverage — so repairs are performed by Ford-certified technicians using Ford-approved parts, and your plan is honored at Ford dealerships nationwide rather than at whichever shop an outside administrator will authorize.
Plans come in four coverage levels, and the difference between them is simply how many components are on the covered list. PremiumCARE is the most comprehensive at more than 1,000 components; PowertrainCARE sits at the other end with 29 critical engine and transmission parts. Briarwood Ford lists PremiumCARE terms available up to 8 years or 150,000 miles, with interest-free payment options over as long as 24 months.
Ford Protect Maintenance Plans work the other direction, pre-paying the scheduled upkeep the warranty never covered — and for routine visits between plan services, our Quick Lane car care service in Saline handles oil changes, tires, and brakes without an appointment.
- PremiumCARE — 1,000+ components, Ford's most comprehensive coverage
- ExtraCARE — 113 covered components across major systems
- BaseCARE — 84 components affecting drivability and performance
- PowertrainCARE — 29 critical engine and transmission components
- Premium Maintenance Plan covers oil changes, rotations, brake pads and wiper blades
- Rental reimbursement, 24-hour roadside assistance and 100% transferable coverage
Used and Certified Pre-Owned Ford Warranty Coverage
A used Ford can carry more coverage than shoppers expect. Any remaining factory warranty transfers with the vehicle, and Ford Blue Advantage certification layers additional dealer-backed protection on top of it. Here's how the certified tiers compare.
Gold Certified — Comprehensive Limited Warranty
12 months or 12,000 miles of comprehensive coverage from your purchase date, layered on top of any factory warranty still remaining on the vehicle.
Gold Certified — Powertrain Warranty
7 years or 100,000 miles of powertrain coverage measured from the vehicle's original in-service date — the single biggest reason to shop certified rather than ordinary used.
EV Certified Coverage
Certified electric Fords add 8 years or 100,000 miles of coverage on high-voltage components, again dated from the original in-service date, plus a 127-point EV-specific inspection.
Blue Certified — Any Make or Model
Non-Ford and older vehicles can qualify for Blue Certified status, which carries 90 days or 4,000 miles of comprehensive and powertrain coverage.
172-Point Certification Inspection
Gold Certified Fords must be six model years old or newer with under 80,000 miles and pass a 172-point inspection by a Ford-trained technician before they can be certified.
Money-Back Guarantee & Roadside
Every Ford Blue Advantage vehicle includes a 14-day or 1,000-mile money-back guarantee, 24/7 roadside assistance during the warranty period, and FordPass Rewards points toward future service.
Using Your Ford Warranty at Briarwood Ford in Saline, MI
A warranty is only as good as the shop that honors it. Briarwood Ford is a full-service Ford dealership at the corner of State and Michigan, and warranty repairs, recall work, and Ford Protect claims are everyday business for our technicians. Bring your VIN — or just your vehicle — and we'll tell you exactly which coverages are still active and what a given repair falls under before any work begins.
Warranty Repairs and Open Recalls
Recalls and field service actions are performed free of charge regardless of your warranty status or how many miles are on the odometer, and they don't consume any of your warranty coverage. We check every vehicle that comes through our service drive for open recalls, so if something is outstanding on your Ford you'll hear about it from us. Our service department is open Monday through Friday, 7:30 AM to 6:00 PM.
Genuine Ford Parts Protect Your Coverage
Repairs performed with genuine Ford and Motorcraft® parts keep your factory coverage intact and carry their own parts warranty. It's the quiet reason dealer service matters more during the warranty period than after it — a non-Ford component that fails and damages something else can put an otherwise valid claim at risk.
Shopping With Coverage in Mind
If you're comparing vehicles right now, warranty status is worth putting on your list next to price and mileage. Ask us how much factory coverage remains on anything in our used vehicle inventory, and whether a Ford Protect plan can extend it. Call (734) 429-5478 or stop by 7070 E Michigan Ave, Saline, MI 48176 — we'll put the numbers in front of you.
The Short Answer: How Long Is a Ford Covered?
Bottom Line: A new 2026 Ford is covered bumper-to-bumper for 3 years/36,000 miles, with powertrain, safety restraint and roadside coverage running 5 years/60,000 miles, corrosion perforation protection for 5 years with no mileage cap, diesel engines for 5 years/100,000 miles, and hybrid and EV high-voltage components for 8 years/100,000 miles. Coverage transfers free to the next owner, and Ford Protect plans extend it well past the factory term.
For Michigan drivers, two of those numbers deserve extra weight. Unlimited-mileage perforation coverage matters when your commute involves five months of road salt a year, and the eight-year electrified-component term makes a used hybrid or EV a far less speculative purchase than it looks on paper. Read your warranty guide once, keep your maintenance records, and most of the uncertainty around ownership costs disappears.
